PS Vita System Software Update (v1.61)

Now that some of you early adopters have PlayStation Vita in your hands, we’re going to begin keeping you posted on any changes to system software here on PlayStation Blog.

PlayStation Vita (updated image)

In preparation for Wednesday’s wide release of PS Vita, tonight we’re making System Software Update (v1.61) available for download. If you are just turning on your PlayStation Vita for the first time, this
update will add the following features:

  • A new application, (Maps), has been added to the home screen.
  • In addition to photos, you can now take videos using the Photo application.
  • You can now publish stories about the products that you rate in PlayStation Store to Facebook.
  • In near, players’ information is now displayed on the Discoveries screen. On this screen, a list of the online IDs of up to 100 players that you have encountered, and the number of times that you encountered each player, are displayed. Tap an online ID to display that player’s profile screen.
  • The Mac OS version of Content Manager Assistant for PlayStation has been released. The Windows version has also been updated.

You can download Content Manager Assistant from here. Refer to the website to find out how to install the application.

If you have already updated your PS Vita to 1.60, 1.61 will improve certain aspects of the system software.

There are a few ways to update the firmware on your PS Vita:

  • Select “System Update” under the “Settings” menu and download the firmware directly to your PS Vita over Wi-Fi.
  • Connect your PS Vita to a PS3 or a PC/Mac and update via Content Manager.

The PlayStation Recap — Viva Vita Edition

The big day is almost here! This Wednesday (or Tuesday night) sees the launch of PS Vita — the most powerful and versatile handheld gaming machine on the planet. PS Vita’s imminent launch stirs up some powerful memories for me, including January of 2011 when Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. revealed NGP (“Next Generation Portable”) to a small group of journalists in Tokyo, and the night of PlayStation’s E3 2011 press conference when Kaz Hirai announced that PS Vita’s 9 to 9 retail price — a shocking development at the time, as many analysts and editors were predicting a price closer to 9.

Time flies, and it’s hard to believe that PS Vita’s long gestation process is nearly complete. But it’s so exciting to see PS Vita making its way into the wild for the first time and hear first impressions from early adopters enjoying the launch lineup. If you’re picking up PS Vita next week, be sure to tell us whether you’re getting a 3G/Wi-fi system or a Wi-Fi system, as well as what games and accessories you’re thinking of buying!

In other news this week: we revealed PS Vita midnight launch events in NYC, Houston, San Diego, Boca Raton, and Santa Clara; we saw new posts for PS Vita launch titles WipEout 2048, Mutant Blobs Attack, Super Stardust Delta (+ Blast Pack DLC), and an update on UNCHARTED: Golden Abyss‘s Black Market feature; a host of new PSN games including Start the Party! Save the World, Wheels of Destruction, and Worms Ultimate Mayhem, Naughty Dog reminisced about creating Jak and Daxter, and David Jaffe guest-starred on a “Twisted” episode of The Tester 3.

Join Us: PS Vita Midnight Launch Events

    Vita-Lifestyle

I go through a sequence of phases when a big electronics product is announced. Starting with mild interest, I quickly transition into research mode where I find out everything I can about the device. By the time launch day rolls around, I’m worked into a frenzy and inevitably end up waiting in a line for midnight release. I’m Jeff Rubenstein, and I’m an early adopter. And I know that I’m not alone.

If you’re like me, please join us this coming Monday Tuesday night for Sony Store midnight launches in the following locations:

Towne Center at Boca Raton – Boca Raton, FL
    Houston Galleria – Houston
    Fashion Valley – San Diego
Century City Mall – Los Angeles
Valley Fair –  Santa Clara, CA
Flagship Sony Store – New York

It’s not a major gaming launch without a ritzy, glitzy New York launch event, and this one is open to you, the gaming public. We’ll start with the best part: the first 200 people to buy a PS Vita at our Sony Store event will get a free copy of ModNation Racers: Road Trip!

We’re flying in PS Vita development teams from around the country to meet and greet you, talk PS Vita games, and sign autographs. While you wait, hostesses will be bringing PS Vitas to you to play and enjoy. This will be the most fun line you’ve ever stood in!

The Sony Store is located at 550 Madison in Midtown New York, and the festivities start at 8pm!

So get there early — you *know* you want to be the gamer who gets handed the ceremonial First Vita from SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton.

    PlayStation Store Update

    Hey everyone,
It’s a special PS Vita early launch week / Valentine’s Day edition of the PlayStation Store Update! But it doesn’t mean there’s no great new PS3 content to talk about either. Which means we’ve got a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.

Kicking things off this week is the official PlayStation Store launch of PS Vita titles available to download once you’ve connected to PlayStation Network. Many of the downloadable titles are also available at retail as well such as UNCHARTED: Golden Abyss. However, there are exclusive titles that are only on PSN including Super Stardust Delta, Escape Plan and Hustle Kings.

    blogheader_ssd_150_020712

Escape Plan delivers a new style of “survival humor” gameplay that takes full advantage of the unique features of the PS Vita. Super Stardust Delta brings the famous twin-stick shooting that made for a gripping experience on PS3 and brings a new edition to PS Vita with all-new gameplay tweaks. Lastly Hustle Kings lets you make your way to the top of the global leader boards in this beautifully chic pool setting. Access the PlayStation Store on your PS3 or PS Vita to download the new PS Vita content.

If you’re looking to purchase new PSP or PS mini titles to play on your PS Vita, you may want to browse the PlayStation Store on your PS Vita as not all older titles are compatible, even if they are digitally available on PSP. Check the full list here. On a similar note, remember that any PSP titles you purchased, or purchase going forward digitally on PSP, are available for you to download and play on your PS Vita, as long as they are listed here.

    blogheader_houseworms_150_020712

PS Vita isn’t the only place to find new PlayStation content. This week also sees the release of PSN Games House of the Dead III, Inferno Pool and Worms Ultimate Mayhem, to name a few. Even better, if you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber, you get new release Inferno Pool free, and day one discounts on House of the Dead III and Worms Ultimate Mayhem!

Additionally for PlayStation Plus subscribers, to show our appreciation and love this Valentine’s Day, we, along with our friends at Ubisoft, are putting Far Cry 2 FREE for subscribers! It’s a great way to get prepped for the upcoming release of Far Cry 3, and an all around amazing game to play if you didn’t get the chance to play it.

Check out the full details of this week’s update below, don’t forget to tune into the second episode of Tester Season 3 and let us know your thoughts in the comments below or join the discussion on the PlayStation Community forums in the Official PlayStation Store Update thread. Happy gaming!

As you can imagine, the teams here at PlayStation have been hard at work gearing up for one of PlayStation’s most exciting product launches ever: PS Vita! I speak for the entire team when I say that we can’t wait to get PS Vita into your hands. That’s because we designed PS Vita to be everything you wanted in the ultimate portable gaming system – a revolutionary device with innovative controls, a brilliant 5’’ OLED screen, new channels for social connectivity, and a killer software lineup.

As we prepare to launch PS Vita we are also unleashing the biggest advertising campaign in PlayStation’s history. Beginning today, PS Vita will be everywhere you turn. Spanning from coast to coast, PS Vita and the official tag line “Never Stop Playing,” will be featured on wallscapes, billboards, radio and television as well as at many of your favorite local retailers. I hope you love the “Never Stop Playing” theme as much as we do. We think it embodies everything that PS Vita represents towards enabling gamers to have deeply immersive, console-like experiences anywhere, anytime. Here’s an early look at what you can expect to see:

You will find the television commercials featured during primetime programming on some of your favorite networks including Fox, Comedy Central and ESPN. Residents of New York, LA, Chicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco will notice PS Vita on buildings and billboards. You’ll find it on your favorite websites and on your favorite radio stations. Wherever you are, PS Vita aims to be.

As we begin to count down the days and hours until PS Vita’s official launch on February 22nd, expect to hear more from us on how you, the PlayStation Nation, will have the opportunity to be a part of celebrations from coast to coast. We’re looking forward to forever changing the way you game and making certain that no matter where you are, you never have to stop playing.

Resistance: Burning Skies – The Chimera Infect PS Vita This May

In case you missed our PS Vita video livechat today, PlayStation’s John Koller revealed an official release date for Resistance: Burning Skies. The Chimera will invade PS Vita on May 29, 2012, bringing you the world’s first portable dual-analog FPS.

Resistance has always boasted iconic visual design, and today we can reveal the Burning Skies box art — a freshly slain Hybrid lying on the streets of New York City with the protagonist’s fire axe resting in the rubble. We like to think it recalls some of the eerie essence of the classic Resistance: Fall of Man box art, but we’d love to hear what you think!

Resistance: Burning Skies pulls you into an entirely new dimension of the Resistance universe. Set in a tale of survival during the August 1951 Chimeran invasion of the East Coast, you take control of Tom Riley, an everyday firefighter from New Jersey who is thrown headfirst into the teeth of the Chimeran war machine, forcing him to redefine his notions of duty and heroism.

As most of you know, this is going to be the first ever dual-analog FPS game on a portable device, and has been built from the ground-up to take full advantage of the power of the PS Vita, including front and rear touchscreen controls. The touchscreen controls add a whole new dimension to the gameplay, delivering a powerful portable shooter experience. Never thought you’d play a console-quality shooter on a portable device? Game Director Harley Baldwin White-Wiedow has one thing to tell you: “TWO STICKS, baby!”

Now get out there and pre-order your copy today. Oh, and be sure to stay tuned in the coming months — we’ll have many more announcements to share soon.
