The PlayStation Recap — GDC Wrap-up Edition

The PlayStation Recap – PlayStation.Blog

Game Developers Conference has officially ended for another year (sob), but we’re still preparing game demo videos and hands-on impressions to release in the weeks to come (yay!). It was a rowdy week for announcements with unveiling of Assassin’s Creed III, a tauntingly vague introduction for PSN gem Datura, a long-awaited release date for Sorcery, and news of a massive Starhawk Beta upgrade.

But that wasn’t all: This week also saw the announcement of a PlayStation SXSW community meetup and tournament, a trilogy of Unit 13 training videos, new video demonstrations for Sound Shapes, PixelJunk 4am and Music Unlimited for PS Vita, a new Armored Core V strategy video focusing on customization and boss fights, blindfold battles on a new episode of The Tester 3, and official word from Capcom on Street Fighter X Tekken’s PS3-exclusive characters.

Wrap Your Head Around PixelJunk 4am With This GDC Demonstration

From the moment we got our first glimpse of PixelJunk 4am, we knew it was like nothing we’d ever seen before. Q-Games always strives to deliver distinctive games with one-of-a-kind experiences. With PixelJunk 4am, they chose to bring this concept to a whole new level. Watch the video to see a live performance and learn more about how the game works.

But what exactly is PixelJunk 4am? A game? An instrument? To answer this question, we turned to Rowan Parker, who explained it from the floor of a launch party held during the 2012 Game Developers Conference where DJ Baiyon “played” for the lucky attendees.

PixelJunk 4am is easy to understand once you have the PlayStation Move motion controller in your hands and the visualizer appears. It varies with each “presentation,” but you can change it at any time by pressing the Select button. What’s important is for the music to “live” in the air, so to speak.

With PS Move, you grab hold of the sound from four different instruments (represented by the four control buttons) and unleash them onto the screen, creating a different sound depending on your movement. You can create layers of audio and then manipulate them as you wish. You can also invent new sounds using the controller and distort the effects by moving the PS Move closer to or farther away from the visualizer.

In the final version of the game, you’ll be able to share your presentations on the PlayStation Network, even with users who do not have the game — all you’ll need is the free viewer application, which enables you to tune into presentations as they are happening or listen to recordings from your favorite artists.

PixelJunk 4am for the PS3 will be available this spring exclusively on the PlayStation Network.

A Close-Up on ARMORED CORE V Customization and Bosses

Hello again, friends. Last time we hit you here on the blog with sneak peek at some Armored Core V multiplayer action caught on video. Today we’re coming back at you with more, and a deeper look at the customization, weapons, bosses, and AC insanity that you’ll be finding yourself in the middle of come March 20th.

Between the kinetic energy, the chemical energy, and the thermal energy, there’s a massive arsenal worth of firepower that you’ll be able to choose from when building your ultimate machine of destruction in the game. As we’ve said before, the team at FromSoftware has been a leader in the genre with this franchise for nearly fifteen years, and with Armored Core V, and they mean business.

Each AC you build is highly unlikely to be identical to any others you come across online since customization is key. Brand new for this game are the recon units that players are going to be able to lay out all over the map to survey the land and take out your enemies. What’s also cool are the emblems and detailing customization aspects that let you trick out your AC like no other. You can get crazy with it, and crazy you’ll need to be when taking down some of these new bosses.

Check out the video and watch out towards the end with some of the first glimpses at the MASSIVE bosses that you’ll find yourself not wanting to take down alone. The Armored Core V world is huge, and going it alone will not be recommended. Check back for more updates and start thinking about exactly how you’ll want to customize your own AC come March 20th. As we like to say around the office… COME HEAVY OR NOT AT ALL! See you online!
